Survivors

Survivors of Suicide

Losing a loved one is a difficult process regardless of the means of death, but losing a loved one to suicide can be particularly difficult due to the stigma that surrounds suicide and mental illness. Survivors (those who lose a loved one to suicide) often find that speaking to other survivors, attending survivor support groups and reading about suicide and surviving suicide can be very helpful. Additionally, many find that they are able to turn their grief into action by working to raise awareness about the problem of suicide and advocate for suicide prevention at that state and federal levels.

SPAN USA was formed by survivors and survivors continue to be its driving force. Sharing their stories, communicating with their legislators via the Legislative Action Center, visiting their elected officials in Washington, DC during SPAN USA's Suicide Prevention Awareness & Training Event, helping put together a Lifekeeper Memory Quilt -- survivors are active in many ways -- working hard to help reduce the rate of suicide in our nation. SPAN USA's successes and achievements are due to the dedication and passion of survivors just like you.

You aren't alone. While each survivor's journey is different, please know that there are resources available and many opportunities for you to reach out, tell your story, and make a difference in others' lives.
