It is estimated that each year over 1.4 million Americans attempt suicide. Research indicates that a previous suicide attempt is a risk factor for suicide. Additionally, there is ample evidence that having strong connections to family and community support and having access to clinical intervention and care are important protective factors.
There is help and support out there if you want it.
The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) is the nation's leading patient-directed organization focusing on depression and bipolar disorder. DBSA is a not-for-profit organization that answers more than 5,000 calls per month on their toll-free information and referral line and receives nearly 101,500 individual visitors monthly to their website. Most importantly, i t has a grassroots network of more than 1,000 patient-run support groups across the country.
The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill is a nonprofit, grassroots, self-help, support and advocacy organization of consumers, families, and friends of people with mental illnesses. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers participate in more than one thousand local affiliates and fifty state organizations to provide education and support, combat stigma, support increased funding for research, and advocate for adequate health insurance, housing, rehabilitation, and jobs for people with mental illnesses and their families.
